Due to St. George’s low elevation and location at the southern end of the state, it boasts favorable weather, especially in the fall, winter and spring. St. George is a popular getaway spot for northern Utah residents during the cooler months. Winter temperatures regularly reach the 60s. In January, the average daytime high temperature is 54 degrees while the average nighttime low temperature dips to 26 degrees. Summers are hot. In July, the average daily high temperature is 102 while the average nightly low is 67 degrees. Spring and fall days are normally pleasant with highs in the 70s and 80s. St. George boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year. It only receives 8.27 inches of annual precipitation. Snow is rare. The city averages only 3.27 inches of snowfall per year, which usual melts quickly.
St. George is one of the fastest growing areas in Utah as well as the nation. In 2007, Inc. Magazine ranked St. George as the No. 1 fastest growing area in the United States, dubbing it “Boomtown, USA.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, St. George was the top Metropolitan Statistical Area in the country for population growth from 1990 to 2000. Located in Utah’s southwestern corner along I-15, St. George is southern Utah’s largest city, boasting approximately 72,000 residents. It is the state’s eighth most populous city. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated Washington County’s population to be over 133,000 in 2007.
Enveloped by red sandstone bluffs and black lava rock ridges, St. George’s picturesque surroundings also include the peaks of the Pine Valley Mountains. The area’s 12 golf courses are a major year-round attraction. Many St. George hotels offer lodging packages that include rounds of golf. A popular getaway destination for residents of colder climes, tourism is an important aspect of the area’s economy. The area’s top employers are the school district and Intermountain Health Care, which operates many of the hospitals and medical clinics in the area. Washington County also features many construction and government as well as technology and manufacturing jobs, including Mikohn, Orgill, Pace American and Steton Technology.
